It is March 31, 2010, last March 23, 2010, I had my part 1 of my DBS surgery, part 2 was March 30, 2010...I am under recovery now, I will tell you all about it after the battery is turned on, April 19, 2010...

March 17, 2010, We went back again to ETMC and did some more tests. They took blood sample and check my condition if I am fit to have surgery. I am suppose to have an EKG and chest x-ray but Dr. Toole said that I am healthy enough to undergo surgery, so no need to have EKG and x-ray and give me a go for surgery. This was the conclusion to all the tests I am supposed to have before the surgery. So, the surgery is a go and it is three days from now, so, wish me luck...Ciao!!!

March 16, 2010, We went back to ETMC for more tests. I have physical therapy evaluation and I was given instructions on how to treat the wound after the surgery.

March 12, 2010, My sister and I went to visit Mrs. Virginia Gage who recently have DBS surgery. Her condition before the surgery is she cannot walk or talk, no facial expressions and tremors on both hands. After the surgery, everything was knocked off, she can walk, talk, have facial expressions like smiling and her tremors was gone. I asked her if she experienced pain during surgery, she said no. Good news for me. My surgery scheduled on March 23, 2010, three days from now.

Last Thursday, February 25, 2010, I have undergone a Barium Swallow Study. It is like a real-time x-ray. They had me swallow yogurt mixed with water and followed its movement from my mouth to my stomach. Then pure yogurt, biscuit with yogurt and last is a very large pill. I myself can see the movement because the computers recording the test is right in front of me. The lady in charge of the study told me that I have a problem with my intake of both liqiud and solid subtances, but she cannot tell if its a result of my Dystonia. She has to report her findings to my neurologist, Dr. Plotkin.

Yesterday, Feb. 16, 2010, I had a neuropsychiatric evaluation with Dr. Roth and I passed. Dr. Roth said that he will recommend a go on the surgery to Dr. Plotkin. By the way, the surgery will take place at East Texas Medical Center (ETMC ) Neurological Institute at Tyler, Texas. More pre-operative evaluation will follow and I will keep you updated in each step...Ciao!

Last Feb. 10, 2010 I met up with my neurologist Dr. Plotkin and Neurosurgeon Dr. Renfro. From their point of view the surgery on Mar. 23, 2010 is a go and they proceed to draw first blood. Dr. Plotkin specifically praised the work of Filipino doctors on this illness and as a result they do not have to do initial MRI and CTSCAN because they already know what the illness is all about.

Update: As usual, walking is more difficult than ever, both left and right hands are numb, I cannot stand for more than 10 minutes because my left hip is killing me. My right leg is smaller and shorter than my left leg...Ciao!

Just an update, my walking has deteriorated a lot, I can barely walk. My eyes have gone worse, seeing is very difficult.

A relative and at the same time a good friend of mine died in a motorcycle accident. The death was really tragic and it devastated me very much.
We were friends since we were young in elementary, high school, college, and even beyond that.
May he rest and peace..

Last Friday (Feb.20), we started working on our first fundraiser for this year called "HOWDY! Postcards". I invited my son's kindergarten friends to be cowboy/cowgirl models, and my friend Dena Strban (www.photographybydena.com)offered her time and talent for the photo shoot. The kids were so cute and they (with their parents) had such a great time.
Once Dena is done with the pictures, we'll make postcards out of it and sell it for our fundraiser. I can't wait to see the photos . . . i'm sure she's got some really cute ones.

Hi! My name is Majal . . . i am Jun's younger sister and i'm a physical therapist practicing here in Texas, USA. I will take over his blog for now to give everyone up to date on our fundraising efforts for Jun's Deep Brain Stimulation surgery (DBS).
Last year we had our first major fundraiser called "Singing Stars for Dystonia". All in all we raised $8,400.00. DBS in the Philippines cost $40,000.00, but if we can raise about $20,000.00, the doctors will do the surgery and the rest of the amount will be financed later thru the hospital. My cervical dystonia and blepharospasm has remained constant for almost a year now, it did not get better but did not get worse either. My walking is the one getting worst, 20 meters is like walking 1 mile.

Hello, I'm Jun Buenaflor, I'm suffering from an illness called X-Linked Dystonia-Parkinsonism (XDP). It is a devastating neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that force certain parts of the body into abnormal twisting, contorted, sometimes painful, movements or postures. The causes of Dystonia are unclear. There are few treatment options for Dystonia patients; no known cure exists for the disease.
